Indoors and Outdoors: Feminin Mouvement in Classical Athens

Abstract
From ancient texts such as Xenophon’s Oeconnomicus, it is possible to infer the association of Greek women with the interior of the οἶκος and of men with the external spaces. However, the visits to honour the divinities, as the Thesmophoria, the eminently female professions, such as those of midwives and nurses; or the saleswomen of the agora are evidence of the presence of women outdoors. It is on these female transits and presences between private and public, interior and exterior spaces of classical Athens that we intend to reflect, through ancient sources and by the analysis of figures such as home’s married women or street prostitutes.
