All your Dead: Páthos, Disgust and Suffering in Sophocles' Antigone

Abstract
In this article, we propose to shed light on the pathetic scene in Antigone of Sophocles. We explore aspects that promote disgust in the spectator during this passage and elements that progressively feed that emotion in the plot of the piece in general, such as impiety towards the gods and, in particular, references to another dead body, the corps of Polynices. Based on studies from phenomenology, following Weiss (2023) and Cairns (2017 and 2022), we approach the ways in which this emotion is neutralized through the exposure of suffering (and physical pain, in other tragedies of Sophocles) with the purpose of, on the one hand, exploring the pathos as a dramatic device and, on the other, observing –following Aristotle– how the playwright channels emotions towards the audience in the final moments of a tragic play.
