The Use of the Art of Measurement and the Just Measure in the Statesman

Abstract
This article analyzes the role of the art of measurement and the right measure in the Statesman. The characterization of the art of measurement appears in Statesman 283b1-287b3, where the Stranger justifies the apparent length of his discourse. While the art of measurement is a dialectical tool, its use or application by Plato is not as explicit in the Statesman as the use of division, myth, and paradigm. Certainly, the characterization of the art of measurement and the right measure has a place in the dialogue (Plt. 283b1-287b3), but its use may have been implicit from the beginning, shaping the explanatory methods (division, myth, and paradigm) best suited to defining the statesman. Accordingly, we argue that the Stranger’s use of division, myth, and paradigm is guided by the right measure. In other words, we seek to determine whether the Stranger’s discourse is crafted with the art of measurement in mind, which would help to understand its role in the methodological construction of the dialogue.
